Gold has always been a highly valuable commodity. It caused a rush in the west when it was discovered and has been valuable throughout time. This is why so many civilizations used it to create their currency. The gold coins which were created have been used throughout time either because they were worth their weight in gold or they were worth far more than that. There have been a few collectible gold coins which have stood out in American history. These have been worth so much for a variety of different reasons.

While there are some collectible gold coins which are worth far more than others are, there is a constant theme in American history of creating gold coins which honor heritage. These coins seldom represent the current values but the values on which the country was founded. This lends to the fact that gold coins are always trying to pay tribute to the values of the society. This is why the coins which are the most valuable in American history are also the most attractive coins ever to be produced in the United States.

The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle

The double eagle is a coin which is intended to be worth $20. The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is considered by most numismatists to be one of the most beautiful coins to ever be produced. It is no longer made today as it was discontinued in 1933 when Franklin D. Roosevelt issued an executive order taking the United States off of the gold standard. The collectible gold coins dated before 1933 are highly valuable in good condition. Those dated 1933 are either fake or they are illegal to purchase and will be seized by the secret service. The last 1933 to legally be sold went for $10.1 Million.

The Liberty Double Eagle

The Liberty Double Eagle has a bust of lady liberty on the obverse of the coin. It was created to pay tribute to the magnificent statue which was given to the United States. The coin was one in a long line of coins to depict Liberty on its face. Smaller denominations not printed in collectible gold coins have featured the presidents of the United States on the obverse and the Eagle or other symbols on the reverse.

The Indian Head Dollar

As far as collectible gold coins go, the Indian Head dollar was never intended to be beautiful or to be collected. It was intended to be used and melted in order to recast in a newer coin. The fact these coins were not reused made the ones which survived being melted and recast more valuable. It is difficult to find ones which are in mint state condition as they were not intended to be collected. The best most people will be able to find of the coins is almost uncirculated or barely uncirculated. The Indian Head dollar fetch a very good price when sold at coin auctions around the world.
